This Turkoman cushion is a wonderful example. The fabric has upon it these delightful bands of red decorated panels. There is a real rustic feel to this piece.
The traditional bags are used mainly as camel bags for storage and transportation. They are often sold when nomadic people reach trading areas. The bags will be produced whilst the men are out herding by the female family members, who will use their primary resource, home-produced wool spun and dyed often; the cording used can be made from goat hair. These bags may sometimes be decorated with unusual additions, buttons, pieces of tin or metal and even shells. These additions are at odds with the simple nature of the items; the makers see them as embellishments and even added value. We turn these pieces into cushions with feather or fibre fillings. The bags are then sewn by hand to close them. This cushion has a burgundy and beige striped pattern with hints of pink and brown on the facing side. The back is a light brown with some fine detail on one side.
